Some browning and occasional soiling, ex-libris Joseph Berens, contemporary half calf with marbled boards, worn, boards detached. ¶ ESTC R22355. Wing R2333; It is based mainly upon notes taken by Rushworth who attended the trial each day and was ‘purposefully placed near the Earl, to take in characters whatsoever should be said, either against or for him’. Rushworth, lawyer and contemporary historian was sometime clerk-assistant to the House of Commons, Secretary to General Fairfax and for a short time to Cromwell. Strafford had been impeached by the Commons ostensibly because of his alleged intention to bring the Irish army over to subdue England. The trial lasted for three weeks without a verdict being returned. It became evident that the attempt to prove Strafford guilty of treason was likely to fail. The Commons dropped the impeachment and brought in and passed a bill of attainder which was eventually accepted by the House of Lords. Relcutantly King Chales gave his assent and Strafford was beheaded on Tower Hill two days later. John Rushworth [Rushforth], (c. 1612–1690), historian and politician. ‘...
