Description: Londini: Per A & J Churchill, 1708. 1st Ed. Folio. [18] + 763pp. English/Latin text. Ex.-Public Record Office lib. with bookplate and several ink stamps to prelims., some light browning, rebound in gilt lettered black library cloth, minor marking, spine chipped, t.e.g. ¶ With the exquisite bookplate engraved by James Mynde (1702 - 1771) of the Tower of London entitled ‘Ex-libris Tabularii Publici in Turre Londinensi’ translating as ‘From the books of the Public Treasurer in the Tower of London.' Begun under a royal warrant in 1693, it was an immense labour of research and transcription on which he spent the last twenty years of his life. The first edition of the Foedera consisted of 20 volumes dated 1704–1735. Sixteen were prepared by Rymer, of which the last two were published posthumously by his assistant Robert Sanderson, who himself compiled the remaining volumes, the last three being supplementary. Documents were presented in Latin with summaries in English ESTC T148099. Translating as ‘Treaties, Conventions, Letters, and Public Proceedings of Every Kind Between the Kings of England, Or any Other Emperors, Kings, Pontiffs, Princes, or Communities, From the Beginning of the Twelfth Century, viz. or in the year 1101, down to our times, inhabited or treated; From the Autographs, in the Secret Treasures of the Royal Archives, kept for many Centuries, transcribed side by side. Sent to Light by the Queen's Command.’ ODNB ‘... the English government under William III decided to have all the public alliances, treaties, and confederacies of England with other countries transcribed and published, an undertaking sponsored by Montagu and Somers, with the former as the probable initiator of the project, Rymer was chosen for the task. He was to spend the rest of his life working on the project ... One of the major faults of Rymer's editing was his inclusion of documents not germane to his purpose. There were other editorial blunders, many of them pointed out by his contemporaries. However, modern scholars are agreed as to the importance of Rymer's achievement. Foedera proved to be a success, praised both in England and abroad ...’
