This is the first printed edition, although the work was composed in the 1650’s (cf. DNB). It provides a study, remarkable in its time, of the life of a public figure not quite of the highest importance, and puts the case for a minister whose perversity, overshadowing the firmness of his Calvinist faith, has encouraged others to vilify him. Although the quality of Hacket's evidence, often a single source, makes his accuracy variable, the biography conveys information and offers insights not readily found elsewhere. Its florid style is, however, no help to the clarity of its exposition, and was not to the taste of all its readers in the 1690s or since ...’
