Description: Paris H. Fournier ..., 1844. 1st Issue in bookform. [vi] + 295 + [i]. Rubric half and title page, frontis., 36 partially coloured plates, 133 woodcut vignettes, 15 full-page woodcuts. With the signature of ‘P. Alexander June 38’, some foxing and browning as usual, later blue remainder? cloth, browned and faded, wear to edges, rebacked with original spine laid down. ¶ The text by Taxile Delord published under the sole signature of Grandville, the name of Delord appearing only incidentally, at the bottom of page 292. The anonymity of the author of the text is claimed in a prospectus from 1843: As often the case the work first appeared in 36 weekly issues from February 18, 1843 to November 11, 1843, each of which is sold at the price of fifty cents. The complete work was published in 1844 at the price of 16 francs with the black engravings or 18 francs with the 36 coloured plates.
