Description: London : [printed by J. Bateson] published by W. Wigstead, 1799 [1800]. 1st Ed. ([iv]-vii) + 69pp. Engraved t.p. [only lacking letterpress t.p. and half title, errata leaf and the final advertisement leaf as is often the case]. 22 aquatint plates. Pp.vii with light crack along gutter hinge in part reinforced to verso, some offsetting and occasional soiling, 1 plate with glue marks to fore-edge, ex.-libris Wm. Wharam, nicely rebound in modern gilt rule edged half calf with marbled boards, gilt ruling and motifs with gilt lettered title label to spine. ¶ Superb plates, with in particular Wigstead’s ‘Welsh Landlady’ an absolute classic. Abbey Scenery 516. With 10 plates signed by Rowlandson, 5 by Wigstead and 7 unsigned. With an additional titlepage engraved, dated 1800. ESTC T11206. Henry Wigstead (died 1800 at Margate) was an English Magistrate amateur painter & caricaturist. He was a close personal friend of Thomas Rowlandson, whom he accompanied on sketching trips to the Isle of Wight (1784), Brighton (1789) and Wales (1787) which resulted in subsequent publications for which Rowlandson provided the illustrations.
