June 9, 1807. 1st Ed. 4to. xv + [ii] + 276pp. With textual watermark 1806. 37 plates [only of 38 lacking specimen of a painting from St Stephens Chapel ‘the King], including aquatints, etchings, engravings, mezzotints, lithograph several hand coloured/tinted. Light age toning, inscribed ‘W. Battell 5.7.6. at Kings 29th of June 1810’, marbled e.ps., contemporary gilt and blind filleted calf, intricate gilt tooled spine together with upper board detached, wear to edges. ¶ Without 16pp. Vindication as listed by Abbey. Abbey Scenery 210 'Process of reproduction is given with each plate. Prideaux, p.352. Plate Number 13 is a very early example of English Lithography. Mr C T Courtney Lewis, in 'Picture Printing in England', page 131, claims that this is the first lithograph published in an English book. The art was, however, practised in England as early as 1801, and it is possible that other examples in books of a more ephemeral nature may be found.' Twyman pp29/30; Adams 98.
