George Hanger, fourth Baron Coleraine (1751–1824), army officer and writer. ODNB ‘... Long-nosed but reportedly considered handsome when young, he was irascible, violent, dissipated, extravagant, and individualistic sometimes to eccentricity. He fought three duels before he was twenty-one. While a guards officer he married, by Gypsy rites, a Gypsy whom he called 'the lovely Egyptea of Norwood' (Bass, 86), but she ran off with a bandy-legged tinker. He ‘retired’ on 25 March 1776, allegedly in disgust after a more junior officer purchased promotion over him ...’ He served in the American Revolutionary War, as aide-de-camp to Sir Henry Clinton during the siege of Charleston, South Carolina in 1776. With great prescience he predicted that there would be civil war in the Americas. A great friend of the Prince of Wales, the prince apparently admiring Hanger's sense of humour and his exploits, both military and with women, appointing him Equerry in 1791.
