Wyndham Smith to t.p., prelims. spotted, light browning, ex.-libris Sir Richard Sutton Bart, contemporary boards with intricate gilt and blind tooling to edges of boards, some marking and wear with leading corner to upper board replaced, rebacked in modern calf with gilt tooling and original gilt lettered title label. ¶ Edward Daniel Clarke (1769–1822), antiquary and mineralogist. He counted amongst his correspondents the Greek scholar Richard Porson, Lord Byron, and Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, and in the scientific field, W. H. Wollaston, Smithson Tennant, and Humphry Davy. A prolific author, he published—beside his own travels—various other books and pamphlets, and some twenty-eight papers in learned journals, dealing with a wide range of antiquities and the topic of mineralogy.
