He counted amongst his correspondents the Greek scholar Richard Porson, Lord Byron, and Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, and in the scientific field, W. H. Wollaston, Smithson Tennant, and Humphry Davy. A prolific author, he published—beside his own travels—various other books and pamphlets, and some twenty-eight papers in learned journals, dealing with a wide range of antiquities and the topic of mineralogy.
