Of Hungarian origin he journeyed through the region in the belief that Hungarians originally came from there. He disguised himself as a ragged dervish, or Muslim holy man, and as an exceptional linguist who mastered the local languages, was able to visit Bokhara, Samarkand and Khiva without detection. Although his exploits gained little attention in his own country, the story of his daring journey preceded him to England where he was lionised."
