ODNB ‘ ... Forbes spent four months the following year conducting experiments on the Swiss glaciers to be followed by further visits in subsequent years and in 1851 a tour of the glaciers of Norway. The result was a stream of some forty publications on the subject over the next twenty years. The chief of these were Travels through the Alps of Savoy (1843), [the above], and a collection of his most important glacier papers, Occasional Papers on the Theory of Glaciers (1859) ...’ Neate F44. ‘Although Forbes visited Norway primarily in the course of his scientific researches into glaciers his book was regarded as a great classic by Cecil Slingsby, the ‘Father’ of Norwegian mountaineering.’
