Publisher's blue cloth, printed in gilt, extremities slightly rubbed. Occasionally some insignificant staining. Revised edition with a new map of the empire. A classic work on China first published in 1848. For many years it was the most reliable source on all aspects of China including information about Chinese life, history, law, education, science, literature, industry, etc. Samuel Wells Williams (1812-84), a celebrated Sinologist came first to China in 1833 to take charge of the printing press at the American Board of Commisioners for Foreign Missions at Guangdong. In 1860 he was appointed chargé d'affaires for the US in Beijing. Later on he became the first professor of Chinese in the US at the Yale University. Cf Cordier BS 85.
