First French edition, translated from the German original (1762) by Hans Bernard Mérian, of this account of the Danish expedition to the Middle East in 1761-7 led by Carsten Niebuhr. Contains preface, introduction by von Bernstorff (minister to King Frederic V), instructions including forty-three paragraphs and one hundred questions composed by Michaelis addressed to the expedition. Also included is a 35-page account of Yemen and four large folding tables listing ancient kings in Yemen, entitled "Essai de tables chronologiques des anciens Rois de l'Yemen, dont les noms sont employés dans la liste de ces Rois, publiée par Pocock". Michaelis (1717-91), a German Lutheran theologian and famous orientalist, was involved in the preparations for the Danish scientific expedition. He wanted to investigate the relationship between the southern Arabic dialects and Hebrew and further find out zoological and botanical facts in the Bible. Chadenat 1933. Gay 2266.
