First edition of the first grammar of the Manchu language in English.Möllendorff (1847-1901) was a German linguist and diplomat, known for his contributions to sinology. He lived in China during the years 1869 and 1882 when he moved to Korea where he was appointed as an advisor to the Korean King Gojong. In 1885 he resigned from the government and returned to China, becoming customs commissioner in Ningbo where he lived until his death. He wrote a number of works on sinology. "This grammar being intended for the practical purpose of guiding the student in learning to read the Manchu works, not of translating into Manchu, everything foreign to the aim is left out, especially all information which properly belong to the sphere of the dictionary" (introduction).
