Description: . Oblong leporello folded album (24.4 x 17.8 cm) with twelve coloured double page woodcut plates of beautiful women, depicting customs and events of Japan's four seasons. Complete with double page decorated title and six leaves with images mounted on both sides. Ink and colour on paper. Protected by tissue guards. Text in Japanese. Original cloth binding with title label pasted on upper cover, lightly rubbed. First edition. A wonderful work with delicate woodcuts of traditionally dressed women in exquisite clothing and fine hairstyles placed in different environments depending on the season. For example: "New Year's ceremony" (January); "Viewing the plum blossoms" (February); "Moon festival" (September); "Pleasure by the sea" (October). "Snow Viewing" (December). Some plates contain children. Toshikata Mizuno (1866-1908), renowned Japanese painter and printmaker, who studied under the great master Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-92). He published a series of bijin prints and genre scenes, featuring women and children, of which this is an excellent example. Some plates with light creasing at fold. Minor wear to the gutter on some leaves and a few starting to separate but overall, a lovely copy of a rare work.
