Mary Lester, born in the Pyrenees, of British parents, was falsely promised a position at a foreign school in San Pedro Sula. The book begins in San Franscico where Mary, after some consideration, decided to travel on horseback from the Pacific port of Ampala across the mountains of Honduras. It is a vivid and humorous account of an adventurous journey written under the pseudonym Maria Soltara. The position at the school never materialised and she returned to England. Originally published in Blackwood's Magazine (1884). Robinson p. 140.
