Original blue cloth, lettered in gilt, spine and extremities slightly faded. Original decorated dust jacket, price-clipped, with some wear, chipped at spine ends. First edition of this account devoted to the history of the Lycian kingdom. Dame Freya Madeleine Stark (1893-1993) was a British-Italian explorer who wrote many books on her travels in the Middle East and Afghanistan. She was inspired to travel by the copy of The Arabian Nights given to her as a child. During the Second World War she was a South Arab expert at the Ministry of Information in London. This is Stark's second narrative of her travels to Turkey, following her work "Iona". She travelled by sea along the Asia Minor coast. After the Second World War she travelled extensively to explore historical sites and learn about culture and tradition.
