Author: [KIMONO DESIGNS] Title: Hana Aoi. Shiga, Nishiyama Kihei, about 1906.
Description: . A large-sized album with one hundred coloured woodblock prints protected by tissue guards. Folio. (32.8 x 22.8 cm). With printed numbers in Japanese. Ribbon-bound in traditional Japanese style. Original coloured paper wrappers, worn, some losses along edges. Hand-written title on upper cover. Preface dated 1906.A splendid work showing lovely designs for kimonos with images of mainly flowers but also of plants, trees and birds. Several include cranes, which symbolise luck and longevity in Japan. The images are woodblock-printed in beautiful, rich colours of which many with metallic highlights. Some minor staining, especially in margins. The tissue guards have darkened with age but protect the images well. We believe that this scarce zuan-ch› (design album) belonged to a kimono maker Nishiyama Kihei in Shiga prefecture. It's marked "nor for sale" in Japanese on colophon page.
