It is the first of its kind to use Roman characters to express the language in writing. The Khondi (or Kui) language is a South-Central Dravidian language spoken by the Khonds, hunter-gatherers living mainly in Odisha (Orissa). John MacDonald Smith was a major on the Madras Staff Corps and appointed special assistant of the Governor of Fort St. George at Gamjam in Orissa.
