Handsome set in tight bindings; 1/2 brown leather with raised bands and gilt lettering and decoration; date published in gilt at bottom of spines; page top edge gilt. Leather on spines uneven in colour; a little rubbed, some faded with scuff marks. Smart marbled end papers; some foxing & occasional mildew speckling on internal pages; colour fold out maps present & intact. Bound by Sissons & Son. Vols 1 & 2 are 3rd edition of 1863. Vols 3,4,5,6,7,8 1st editions of 1868, 1868, 1875, 1880, 1887, 1887.
