Title: Lady Filmy Fern or The Voyage of the Window Box. A story by Thomas Hennell accompanied by Edward Bawden illustrations. With an introduction by Peggy Skipwith.
Description: Hamish Hamilton, London, 1980. 1st Edition. Hardcover. First Edition (first printing). Small landscape 4to. Pictorial laminated boards. Illustrated title-page. Eighteen splendid Bawden watercolours, one on each recto accompanied by Hennell's text to the adjacent verso. In fine state with near fine non-price-clipped pictorial dust wrapper featuring another Bawden drawing, and marred only by a single tiny scuff to bottom edge. The outcome of a Consequences-like game played by Bawden, Eric Ravilious and their wives in the early 1930s. Bawden produced a series of watercolours to illustrate the adventures of the imaginary protagonists (the delightfully named Lady Filmy Fern, Mr. Virgin Cook and Welsh Polypod) and Hennell, upon seeing the illustrations, agreed to write the story down. Rejected by one publisher, the illustrations were pasted into Bawden's scrapbook and stored for safe keeping during the war in a well in his garden with much of his other work and all but forgotten about. Fine/Near Fine.
