'Dedicated (by permission) to Lord Brougham, who in his nobly earned elevation has never ceased to advance the intellectual and social welfare of the people; and who lent, when the act was courageous and the service priceless, the influence of his great name for the promotion of social science, of which co-operation is the industrial part' The Rochdale Principles are a set of ideals for the operation of social co-operatives-- set out in 1844 by the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers in Rochdale, England, these principles form the basis of the principles which co-ops worldwide still use today. George Jacob Holyoake (1817-1906) was an English secularist, co-operator and newspaper editor-- he became a 'socialist missionary' in 1840 and a follower of social reformer Robert Owen, a founder of Utopian socialism and the co-operative movement. In this time period, Holyoake moved to Worcester in west-central England and became a full-time socialist lecturer. Holyoake, as a leading proponent of the co-operative movement, gained prominence in the 'secularist' press and is credited with coining the terms 'secularism' and 'jingoism'.
