This work is the results of his fifteen months stay and observation in Japan, where he was a surgeon with the Dutch East India Company, stationed at the Dutch factory in Deshima, in the Nagasaki harbour. When he returned to Sweden he succeeded Linneaus as professor at the University of Uppsala, from 1784 until his death. ¶ With a short hottentot vocabulary
