¶ First edition, the English edition appeared in 1799. Barthélemy Faujas de Saint-Fond (1741-1819) was a French geologist and volcanologist. He made in 1784 a tour through England, Scotland and the Hebrides, and visited Fingal's cave which is formed of basalt. He was the first man to realize that it's origin must be volcanic. Athough not all his conclusions were right, this work remains a milestone in geology. (Poggendorff I, p.724) -A very fine copy.

(binding damaged.; flyleaves loose; frontisp. and first pp. loosening; sl. loose in binding) English explorer, anthropologist, and eugenicist known for his pioneering studies of human intelligence. expeditions in 1845–46 up the Nile River with friends and into the Holy Land alone were preliminaries to a carefully organized penetration into unexplored parts of southwestern Africa. After consulting the Royal Geographical Society, Galton decided to investigate a possible opening from the south and west to Lake Ngami, which lies north of the Kalahari desert some 550 miles east of Walvis Bay. The expedition, which included two journeys, one northward, the other eastward, from the same base, proved to be difficult and not without danger. Though the explorers did not reach Lake Ngami, they gained valuable information.

With the booksellers-ticket of Van Tetroode Amsterdam. Rudolf Hentzy of Hentzi (Bern 1731- Den Haag 1803) was the son of the executed Swiss politician Samuel Hentzi. In 1749 18 years old he went with his mother in exile to The Hague, where his father had friends at court. In 1785 he issued the coloured "Vues remarquables des montagnes de la Suisse" , maybe as revenge to the Swiss for the murder of his father. After he died, in 1805, his library was sold at auction in The Hague by Gerrit Backhuyzen, who also bought the manuscript and copperplates for this work.
