[4], [i-v], vi-xviii, [1-3], 4-144 pp; [2], 145-192, [xvi, Catalogue of the Portraits of Charles Dickens], [viii], [1]-82, [2, errata, verso blank. General title-page plus title-pages for each volume and for the supplement (bound at end of Volume II, complete with index and the “Catalogue of the Portraits of Charles Dickens”). 31 engraved portraits, 30 engraved remarque plates, 78 illustrations in the text and 67 'Additional Illustrations' Bound ca. 1890 for Sotheran & Co. of London. Three-quarter red morocco over marbled boards ruled in gilt. Spines elaborately tooled in gilt and lettered in compartments, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. With eight original four-page printed wrappers bound in at end of volume I and six original four-page wrappers bound in at the end of volume II. Originally issued in thirteen monthly parts during 1889-1890, with a five-part supplement issued in 1890. Further illustrations and another supplement were published, respectively, in 1891 and 1892. Frederick George Kitton (1856-1904) was a British wood-engraver, author, and illustrator. He is best known for illustrating and editing the works of Charles Dickens. As one of the founders of the Dickens Fellowship, Kitton compiled the catalogue of their 1903 exhibition. His Dickensian library was purchased by the Fellowship and donated to the Guildhall Library.
