An excellent example complete with the 4 page publisher's catalog bound in at the end of volume 2. Edited and annotated by Robert Southey, this first printed facsimile of the Caxton edition of 1484 was immensely popular and influential. This edition marks the ninth printing of Malory's work, following those by Caxton (1485), De Worde (1498 & 1529), Copland (1557), East (c. 1575), Stansby (1634), and two 12mo editions in 1816. It was the first modern attempt to restore Malory’s text as originally published by Caxton. Contemporary advertisements state that only 250 copies were printed, with 50 on large paper, though publisher records suggest the total may have reached 1,000. This is the large paper edition, measuring an impressive 12 1/4 inches, making it a scarce and significant printing. Gaines A9. .
