Delmar Banner and his wife, Josephine, had developed a friendship with Beatrix Potter in 1935 which lasted until her death in 1943. Potter admired Banner's work and purchased several pieces from the artist. This version of his portrait of Beatrix in her youth was commissioned from Banner by renowned Beatrix Potter collector, Doris Frohnsdorff in 1979. An earlier version was painted in 1969 for Leslie Linder, and which was also used for the cover of his book, The History of the Writings of Beatrix Potter (1971). Delmar BANNER(1896-1983) was a German-born British painter known for his landscape and portrait work. Among his most notable pieces is a 1938 oil portrait of Beatrix Potter, now housed in the National Portrait Gallery, London. His artistic achievements also extended to the 1948 Summer Olympics, where he participated in the painting event of the art competition. While living in Cumbria, Banner and his wife befriended Beatrix Potter, who encouraged his artistic development. In 1938, he painted her portrait, later donating it to the National Portrait Gallery in 1948. Following World War II, the couple established a studio in London while maintaining their home in the Lake District. They frequently exhibited together, with joint exhibitions in London (1947, 1954) and Bradford (1987). Banner’s work primarily consisted of portraits and landscapes, often depicting the Cumbrian Fells. His more formal portraits are part of the collections at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, as well as the Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery. His landscape paintings are held in several public collections across the UK, including Abbot Hall, Ferens Art Gallery, Leicester Museum and Art Gallery, and Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens. .
