This edition contains a limitation leaf inserted after the title-page bearing the following statement: “The autographed edition of this book is limited to one hundred copies, none of which will be offered for sale. This copy is number 85. It is presented with the compliments of the author.” Signed: Beatrix Potter. This signed limited edition was issued to reserve copyright and released concurrently with the first trade edition. Beatrix Potter considered this tale of a miniature, animal-run traveling circus to be "too personal [and] autobiographical," making her reluctant to publish it in England. Instead, she arranged for the Philadelphia publishing house David McKay to produce a well-proportioned and illustrated edition. However, due to reciprocal copyright agreements between the United States and Great Britain, publishing in one country meant forfeiting rights in the other. To circumvent this, Potter acquired 100 sets of sheets from the American edition and had a local printer produce an altered first gathering (eight pages) along with an additional leaf. She then replaced the original preliminaries with these newly printed pages and had the hybrid edition plainly bound. Notably, she took the opportunity to replace the original printed dedication, "To Henry," with several illustrations of her pet dogs. The first UK trade edition did not appear until 1952, nine years after her death. Not in Linder, Quinby, or the V. & A. Collection. .
