Minimal darkening to spine. A near fine copy. The original manuscript for Mrs. Tittlemouse was presented to Harold Warne's daughter Nellie in January 1910, and comprised eight paintings by its author. The final illustrations in the finished book are a superb insight into Beatrix's skill as an interpreter and illustrator of the natural world, the numerous insect & animal pests, referred to famously as "visitors" in the published version (as opposed to "friends" in the earlier ms. version), who intrude upon the eponymous heroine's hearth & home being splendidly represented in the accompanying illustrations. It has been speculated that the frustration with such intrusion and the need for privacy is a metaphor for Beatrix's own anxieties at the time, as her fame as an author meant she was often called upon by visitors at Hill Top. This coincided with a time when she was kept very busy taking care of her elderly parents and managing Hill Top, and as of 1910 she went from producing two books a year to just one, noting: "I did not succeed in finishing more than one book last year..I find it very difficult lately to get the drawings done. I do not seem to be able to go into the country for a long enough time to do a sufficient amount of sketching and when I was at Bowness last summer I spent most of my time upon the road going backwards & forwards to the farm - which was amusing, but not satisfactory for work." Quinby 18. Linder, p. 429. V & A 1619. .
