Small quarto (5 3/8 x 4 1/8 inches; 137 x 105 mm.). 75, [1, blank] pp. Color frontispiece (included in pagination) and nine full-page color illustrations. Black and white vignette on title-page and nineteen black and white vignettes in text. Publisher’s buff paper boards, stamped in dark green on front cover and spine. Color pictorial label on front cover within a rectangular blind panel with scalloped bottom edge. Color pictorial endpapers (Quinby VIII & IX). In the original (price-clipped) printed dust jacket, near fine. Loosely inserted is an 8-page folding catalog of “Beatrix Potter’s Picture Books”. With an autograph letter of provenance dated "21 March 1998 Re the book'The Tale of Ginger and Pickles' by Beatrix Potter. The above book was signed by Beatrix Potter in 1941, and was given to me by my next door neighbour Mr. W.A.D. Eastham, manager of Martins Bank, Blackpool [until 1951]. During the war he stayed each year in the village of Sawrey, and became quite friendly with Beatrix, who as a favour agreed to sign the book. Also enclosed is a Frederick Warne's catalogue. (Mrs) Ruth Lee". Originally a manuscript presented to Harold Warne's daughter as a Christmas present, but with one of the illustrations it contained cut-out for use in the book. The tale tells of two shopkeepers, the eponymous Ginger & Pickles, who extend unlimited credit to their customers (a veritable who's-who of characters from Beatrix's other works) and, as a result, are forced to go out of business. .
