The second (and last) book from the from 'New Series', again with pen & ink illustrations to help the balance the reduced number of color plates, Pigling Bland has its origins in the successful sale of "the two biggest little pigs" by Beatrix herself from her farm at Hill Top. The character of Pig-wig, the black female pig who is rescued by Pigling Bland, was also derived from a real event, the author purchasing her at another nearby farm as an 'impulse' buy, much to the subsequent horror of her farm manager John Cannon, who felt strongly that all the farm's pigs should have a pedigree of some sort. As a result Beatrix tended to 'Pig-wig' herself, until, according to local legend, "in the end it became her pet, and followed her everywhere indoors and out." Linder, p. 429; Quinby 22. .
