This collection of highly detailed fashion plates is often attributed to Lanté, the costume drawings are very much in his style, although there is no signature to allow the authorship to be confirmed (Colas). “Georges-Jacques Gatine was the leading costume engraver of his time. For many years he supplied plates for the Journal des dames. He engraved the 115 designs which make up Le bon genre , a lively mélange caricaturing people and scenes of contemporary interest” (Ray, The Art of the French Illustrated Book, p. 141). Georges-Jacques Gatine (1773-1848) is considered one of the 19th-century masters of fashion plate etchings. He was closely associated with L'abbé de la Mésangère, who was director of Journal des Dames et Modes. Gatine was the engraver for the important portfolio Le Bon Genre (1817) and Incroyables et Merveilleuses (ca. 1815) which satirized Parisian social life and proved to be an inspiration for the art of Daumier. Gatine executed several other works based on drawings by Lante. The genre painter Louis-Marie Lante (born 1789) did watercolors for several collections of costume published by Journal des Modes after 1817. Louis-Marie Lanté (1789-1871) was a prominent painter and designer, celebrated for his contributions to fashion illustration and costume studies. He trained under Vaudoyer and exhibited at the Salons from 1824 to 1838, earning a silver medal at Lille in 1825. As the most prolific designer for the Journal des Dames et des Modes, Lanté created numerous fashion figures in watercolor, which were engraved by Georges-Jacques Gatine. Lanté's work extended beyond fashion figures; he also participated in producing large format board suites for the Journal des Dames et Modes. These suites included depictions of regional costumes, especially from Normandy, as well as costumes from foreign countries and historical attire. Notably, he contributed to the "French Gallery of women famous for their talents or beauty, or portraits, drawn, engraved and colored." Lanté's elegant and refined illustrations provide an invaluable record of 18th and 19th-century feminine and masculine outfits. The Plates: 1. Costume Espagnol 2. Costume Basque 3. Irlandaise 4.
