Neat ink note on top corner and small label on lower left hand corner of front wrapper. A rare and fine series depicting the soldiers of the Royal Saxon army, dedicated to Frederick Augustus II, Duke (later King, 1836-1854) of Saxony. An amazing survival. The Saxon Army, which served the Electorate and later the Kingdom of Saxony, existed as a standing army since 1682. Initially known as the Electoral Saxon Army, its name changed to the Royal Saxon Army after Saxony was elevated to a kingdom by Napoleon in 1807. This army contributed to the contingent armies of both the German Confederation and the North German Confederation. According to Article 63(1) of the Imperial Constitution dated April 16, 1871, the Saxon Army retained its legal independence even within the German Empire. However, following Germany's defeat in World War I and the subsequent end of Saxony's monarchy, the Saxon Army lost its limited military autonomy. In 1919, it was integrated into the imperial army of the Weimar Republic. Friedrich Leopold Schubauer (1795-1852) achieved the rank of Oberstlieutenant in the Saxon army before pursuing a career as a military painter. He tried his hand at battle painting, with some of his paintings coming into the private possession of the King of Saxony. He was a student of Gustav Adolph Hennig in Leipzig. He was mentioned next to the Bavarian Major General Carl Wilhelm von Heideck as an artist on the same range as an Albrecht Adam. The main work of Schubauer is a reproduction of the Battle of Podobna in 1812. Joseph Trentsensky (1794-1839) together with his older brother, Matthias Trensentsky, opened their own lithographic publishing and office supply company in 1819. From 1820 Joseph was part owner of a stationery and artist's supplies shop on the Hoher Markt [de], and then opened his own Nuremberg goods shop in 1829. In 1822 he received a patent for the production of lithographs using zinc plates, and in 1829 one for wooden blocks.
