First edition. Two parts in one. Large quarto (12 1/2 x 10 1/4 inches: 317 x 260 mm.). Title supplied in manuscript, [4, foreword], [3, list of plates], [1, blank]. Seven hand colored engraved plates, all mounted on stubs. Plates 2-7 numbered at top right-hand corner. Contemporary tree calf, neatly and sympathetically rebacked. Housed in a custom-made, brown cloth folding chemise, spine with black morocco label lettered in gilt. A fine copy. A suite of horse-riding engravings by Ephraim Gottlieb Krüger after sketches by Carl Adolf Heinrich Hess. The text leaves contain instructions on the most natural and easiest way to train horses. A rare and charming series of seven hand colored etched plates representing equestrian scenes. Each plate with the imprint "Hess inv." and Krüger Sclulp". The first four plates are from 1800, the last three from 1802 (Lipperheide) Carl Adolf Heinrich Hess (1769-1849), was a renowned German painter who was particularly renowned for his depiction of horses and equestrian scenes. Best known as a painter in oil, watercolor and pastel of horses and military scenes, Hess also tried his hand at engraving, the technique of which he learned from Krüger, the co-signatory of this series. Ephraim Gottlieb Krüger (1756-1834) was a Saxon engraver and professor at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts . A lovely copy of this series that no bibliographer has seen and which is absent from the catalogs of the largest specialized collections such as Huzard, Huth, Curnieu or Anderhub.
