A rare series by an artist, possibly a woman, that recorded the events first hand, commemorating the naval review carried out by Queen Victoria in June 1845. The Royal inspection of the Experimental Squadron was assembled to test the speed and sea-going qualities of new ship designs. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert attended this inspection, marking a significant historical moment as it was the last time a Royal Review consisted solely of sailing ships. Nearly the last occasion for Queen Victoria to witness the men who fought at Trafalgar exhibiting their remarkable skill, agility, and speed in setting the sails. This event represented the end of an era, as steam power would soon begin to dominate naval technology. Rare: Not in the British Library. We can trace only two other copies at auction (1966 & 2007), both seemingly uncolored. Alfred Basil Lubbock MC (1876-1944) was a British historian, sailor, and soldier renowned for his extensive writings on the last generation of commercial sailing vessels in the Age of Sail. Educated at Eton College, where he was a member of the cricket team from 1894 to 1895, Lubbock also developed skills in drawing and watercolor painting during his school years. Though expected to attend King's College, Cambridge, he chose instead to travel, leaving Britain by steamship for Canada. Lubbock's literary career began with his first book, Round the Horn Before the Mast (1902), which featured some of his own paintings. He went on to write several notable works, including The China Clippers (1914), The Last of the Windjammers (1927-29, in two volumes), and The Arctic Whalers (1937), many of which are part of the National Maritime Museum's collection in London. An early member of the Society for Nautical Research since 1911, Lubbock served on its council from 1921 to 1924 and contributed to its journal, The Mariner's Mirror. A passionate yachtsman, Lubbock became the first Commodore of the Hamble River Sailing Club in 1919 and collaborated with Alfred Westmacott to develop the Hamble One Design Class yacht. He maintained a close friendship with Captain Wilfred Dowman, who famously repurchased the Cutty Sark from the Portuguese. This friendship led to Lubbock's works on the Cutty Sark, including The Log of the Cutty Sark (1924) and Sail, The Romance of the Clipper Ships (1927, 1929, 1936 in three volumes). Lubbock's book The China Clippers inspired Kyril Bonfiglioli's All the Tea in China, showcasing his lasting influence on maritime literature. The Plates: 1. Title 2. Entrance of Portsmouth Harbour.
