The music, lasting approximately 8 minutes, was first performed on September 23, 1973 at the Center for New Music, University of Iowa. William Hibbard conducted Jon English, bass trombone, Charles West, bass clarinet and Motter Forman, harp. Appointed to the University of Iowa's Music Composition faculty in 1966, William Hibbard (1930-1989) was a noted composer, conductor, violist and teacher. He chaired the University's Theory and Composition department in the School of Music and served as music director of the Center for New Music, the University's professional new music ensemble. From 1965 through 1974, Hibbard served as director of the University's Center for New Performing Arts which, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation and the University, brought together interdisciplinary arts in a quest to advance new music and art. In addition to also being the Principal Viola for the Quad City Symphony, Hibbard composed more than 40 works. "Menage" a composition for soprano, trumpet and violin was selected as one of 5 American works submitted to the 1977 ISCM Festival in Bonn, Germany. Hibbard was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the New England Conservatory in 1988. William Hibbard died of AIDS in 1989. Very good .
