[1878]. [1878]. Good. - Octavo, 9-3/4 inches high by 6-1/8 inches wide. Softcovers, bound in individual self wraps. Seven issues plus an addendum leaf. The pagination is as follows: Title & pages 3-16 [birds nos. 1-11]; title & pages 17-26 [birds nos. 12-30]; title & pages 154-166 [birds nos. 31-47]; title & pages 41-58 [birds nos. 48-71]; title & pages 11-25 [birds nos. 72-101]; title & pages 109-128 [birds nos. 102-149]; and title & pages 75-93 [birds nos.150-209], plus [1] leaf. The deckle-edged pages of several issues are unopened and uncut. The cover pages are slightly soiled and darkened along the edges. Several of the overlapping edges of the pages are slightly chipped, including the front edge of the addenda leaf. Despite the peculiarity of the pagination, this is a textually complete set of the work. Good. original separate editions of these offprints from the "Bulletin of the Essex Institute", from Vol. X through Vol. XIII. Parts 1 and 2 are marked by the original owner "Received 17, 1779" and have several of his apparently knowledgeable notes in the margins. The American ornithologist and field naturalist Edgar Alexander Mearns (1856-1916) was born in Highland Falls, New York. Mearns graduated from the Columbia College of Physicians in 1881 and served as a surgeon in the U.S. Army from 1882 to 1899. He stayed on as medical officer in several army institutions and traveled to the Philippines on several occasions and even once to Guam. As medical officer to the International Boundary Commission, he wrote on the fauna and flora which was found in the lands between Mexico and the United States and published "Mammals of the Mexican Boundary of the United States" in 1907. He accompanied the Smithsonian-Roosevelt African Expedition as a naturalist and was a member of the Childs Frick expedition in Africa, collecting specimens of birds for the Smithsonian Institution. Mearns scientifically described species of birds and other animals and co-founded the American Ornithologists' Union in 1883. Good .
