Very good. - Folio, 12-1/2 inches high by 9-3/4 inches wide. Hardcover, bound in black pebbled cloth with floral decorations, titled in gilt on the front cover. The covers are rubbed & bumped with slight wear to the corners and edges. The spine has perished and is thus lacking. 24 semi-monthly issues each issue containing 4 pages for a total of [96] pages. The volume is profusely illustrated with wood engravings, including a pictorial banner title at the head of the first page of each issue and with a large wood engraving on those pages. The overlapping corners of three leaves are folded in, as issued. There are occasional minor stains with a small chip out from the corner of one leaf. There is rippling to the endpapers and pastedowns as well as some offsetting. Very good. First edition. Among the contents are: The last stanza of "Jesus is our Shepherd" by Hugh Stowell with music (Issue 11); "The Drunkard's Child" a story in verse: "She sleeps upon an outside stair, / Although the night is bleak, / And on a hard and stone-propp'd board / She pillows her pale cheek. / The door is closed. Within the house / No sound of life, no light. / Why sleeps the little girl outside / On such a bitter night? / Alas! the answer tells a tale / repeated oft each day, / And will be told while over men / Drink wields its iron sway." (Issue 12).; "Golden Shore" an anonymous hymn in 3 verses with music (Issue 15); "Come to Jesus Now" by Edmund Turney in 4 verses with music (Issue 21); "Captain Gulliver in Captivity to the Lilliputians", a story illustrated with a dynamic half-page wood engraving. (Issue 23). Very good .
