EARLY, POSSIBLY FIRST, PERFORMANCE OF TWO SONGS BY ELGAR, HIS OPUS 26 - Small quarto, 7 inches high by 5-1/2 inches wide. Softcover, bound in stitched printed cream wrappers. The covers are lightly soiled & bumped with a couple of minor spots of foxing. [16] unnumbered pages consisting of the program with the text of the songs and a list of the officers and members of the Women's Choral Society of Jersey City, N.J. Internally fine. Included in the program were two of Elgar's part-songs that he composed with lyrics based on poems by his wife C. Alice Elgar. The songs were originally written as three-part songs for female voices accompanied by 2 violins and a piano. The songs are amongst his most popular, "The Snow", Op.26, No. 1 and "Fly, Singing Bird", Op. 26, No. 2. The poems are printed in full in the program. This may well have been the first performance of the songs as they then premiered in London on March 12, 1904 in Queen's Hall. The conductor of the concert, Arthur D. Woodruff, was the founder of the Women's Choral Society of Jersey City, NJ. He was the long-time conductor of the University Glee Club of New York. RARE. Very good .
