Very good. - Octavo, 9 inches high by 5-7/8 inches wide. Hardcover, bound in creamy yellow boards backed with a dark brown leather spine, titled in gilt on the spine. The corners of the covers are bumped with minor wear. The covers are soiled and slightly stained, including staining to the leather spine. 241 pages, profusely illustrated with wood engravings by Branston and Wright after William Harvey. There is some occasional light foxing with a very few minor stains. Awarded as a "Prize" by the "Uxbridge School" with their prize label mounted on the front pastedown as well as an early bookseller's label discreetly mounted at the bottom. Very good. First edition. An entertaining account of the wild animals which were held at the Tower of London for scientific study and popular entertainment. Includes descriptions, most illustrated with a wood engraved headpiece by William Harvey, of the Bengal Lion, the Striped Hyena,the Japanese Civet, a Brown Coati, an Ocelot, the Caracal, the Thibet Bear, etc. Very good .
