Hardcover, bound in full period natural vellum with overlapping edges, titled in early ink manuscript on the spine. All page edges are speckled blue. The vellum covers are very slightly soiled. [20], 5-1136 & [48] pages, with a pictorial title page engraved by "C v. D.", decorative initials, and head & tailpieces. The engraving features a proscenium arch and stage on which Atlas, holding the celestial spheres, is confronted by Hercules bearing his sword and shield. The book label of "L. Marcel" is mounted on the front endpaper and there are previous owners' notes on the front and rear endpapers. There are also a very few markings in the text. An otherwise near fine attractive book. First edition, first printing of this variorum edition edited by Boxhorn. Titus Maccius Plautus (c. 254–184 BC) was a Roman playwright of the Old Latin period. His comedies are the earliest Latin literary works to have survived in their entirety. He is known to have had an influence on Shakespeare and Moliere. Marcus Zuerius van Boxhorn (1612-1653) was an important historical linguist who discovered the similarity among Indo-European languages. The text is in Latin. Very good .
