Very good. - Small octavo, 6-1/4 inches high by 3-1/2 inches wide. Hardcovers, bound in period cream vellum with titles penned in early manuscript on the spines. All of the edges are stained red. The covers are soiled. Volume 1 has [8] & 260 pages; volume 2 has [2] & 320 pages. The title pages are printed in red and black with a woodcut device. Illustrated with a frontispiece and 7 finely engraved plates by Johann Martin Bernigeroth (1713-1767) after Matthias Oesterreich (1716-1778). Both volumes are also enhanced with decorative initials, head & tail pieces. The title pages are slightly toned. A very good attractive set. First edition. The author claims in his Preface that these writings were indeed the work of Mr. de Verval and not fiction. Eleazar de Mauvillon (1712-1779) was a French-German historian and writer who first settled in Dresden and later in Leipzig where he taught French at the University of Leipzig. For a time he served as a secret secretary at the court of Augustus III, King of Poland and was a tutor for the Crown Prince. The text is in French. Very good .
