Author: Gray, Elizabeth Caroline Hamilton (1800-1887). Scottish historian and travel writer. Title: The Densely Penned 2-Page Conclusion to an Autograph Letter Signed Caroline Hamilton Gray by the Scottish Historian and Travel Writer Elizabeth Caroline Gray.
Description: [19th Century]. - A densely penned 2-page conclusion to an autograph letter signed by Elizabeth Caroline Gray written on both sides of 10-5/8 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide onionskin paper. A difficult to read letter, given her handwriting and the shadow of the words penned on the verso, apparently written to a friend: "..but his very countenance spoke if not of genius within at least of love & charity without. I have visited both church & school[?] since I saw you, but have no time to tell about them. I some times think I must possess a talent for dawdling, [___] [___] times that my daily cross is to see my time frittered away, & nothing - nothing done.." Signed "Caroline Hamilton Gray" followed by a 3 line postscript. Folded twice vertically, the page is mounted to cream card stock with clear document tape along the left edge. The author's name is penned in another hand upon the tape and a portion of a clipped catalog listing of one of her books is also mounted on the tape. Very good.
The Scottish historian and travel writer Elizabeth Caroline Hamilton Gray (1800-1887) was born in Alva, Clackmannanshire. An 1837 exhibit on the history of Estrucan artifacts organized by Domenico Campanari inspired her to pursue the subject. She traveled to Italy and published "Tour to the Sepulchres of Etruria" in 1840. She faced criticism for her gender as critics of the period thought women were unsuited to write about history. In addition to her research on Etruria, she went on to write about the classical and early medieval church and empire as well as children's histories of Rome.
RARE. Very good .
