INSCRIBED BY THE CALLIGRAPHER THEODOR JUNG - An original 17 inch high by 11 inch wide broadside printed on buff parchment paper with 11 lines of Christmas verse printed in red & blue from Theodor Jung's calligraphy. The text is illustrated with a blue woodcut of the Virgin Mary and child by William Sanderson. The broadside is inscribed on the verso in a fine calligraphic hand by Theodor Jung: "Greetings from Theodor, Mable & Rikky". Near fine. The Austrian born calligrapher Theodor Jung (1906-1986) moved to the United States when he was 6 years old. He worked as a graphic designer for the Chicago Times after pursuing studies in book design and the humanities. He briefly moved back to Vienna before returning to work for the Federal Emergency Relief Administration drafting statistical maps, graphs and charts. Roy Stryker hired him as a photographer and graphic designer but, after photographing 200 or so images in Maryland, Ohio, Jung left to work as a photographer for the Consumer's Council and as art director for "Consumers' Guide". He illustratFed books for the War Food Administration and went on to work for advertising agencies and designed books for University Presses. In his later years, Jung worked as a book illustrator and designer for Stanford University. Born in Latvia, the artist William Sanderson (1905-1990) moved to New York City where he first developed his skills as a graphic illustrator before settling down in Colorado. His graphic work appeared in numerous publications including the New Yorker and the New Masses. Sanderson's book illustrations include Marion Hurd McNeely's "The Jumping Off Place", Micheal Gold's "Jews Without Money", Ellery Queen, Jr.'s "The Black Dog Mystery", among others. After serving in the Army Air Corps during the war, Sanderson taught at the University of Denver while continuing to paint. RARE. Fine .
