Charles Poore thanks John Hyde Preston for information relevant to his review of Peter Fleming's "Operation Sea Lion" published in 1957. "I wish I'd had your interesting letter about Hitler's infuriated admiration for Britain before I wrote the review.. It fills out parts of Peter Fleming's postwar researches.." Signed in full "Charles Poore". Folded for mailing, there is heavy offsetting with a couple of tiny chips along the bottom edge of the page. Very good. For nearly 40 years Charles Poore (d. 1971) was a book critic for The New York Times. He once wrote that "A book critic.. is a man who is paid to conduct his education in public. He ought to try to make the wonder of learning as contagious as possible". He published a biography of Goya in 1936. He interrupted his career to work in the Office of War Information in Washington, D.C. under his friend Archibald MacLeish. He was subsequently assigned as a captain in Army Intelligence and traveled to Casablanca, Sicily, Naples, England, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. He returned to The New York Times and edited "The Hemingway Reader". At the time of his death, he was working on a history of the 1846 to 1848 war between the United States and Mexico. Very good .
