A press release serving as caption for the photograph is mechanically reproduced in type on a sheet of paper mounted from the verso. The text of the press release reads as follows:
"MARSHAL FOCH DIES / PARIS...Marshal Foch commander of the Allied armies during the war died today. This is one of the last pictures to be made of him and shows him with his grand-children at the family country estate. / AB 3-2--29".
A French Army General during the First World War, Ferdinand Foch was appointed Marshal of France and appointed as supreme commander of the allied armies just prior to the German's Spring Offensive. He accepted Germany's surrender on November 11, 1918. An advocate of peace terms which would have assured France's safety, his prophetic words about the Treaty of Versailles "This is not a peace. Its an armistice for 20 years" was born out. Good .
