The price-clipped dust jacket is rubbed & soiled, the edges are chipped with a short tear to top edge of rear panel. [vi], 278 & [1] pages. The front endpaper & the edges of the pages are darkened with a few pages very lightly creased. A previous owner's name & date are penned on the half-title. Good.

First American edition.

An important black South African novelist and journalist, Peter Abrahams (1919-2017) became a crew member on a ship as a stoker in 1939 hoping to get to England where he finally arrived in 1941 and where this book was written.

The story of a romance between a young South African man of mixed race and a white girl. The author "was born in 1919 in the Negro slums of Johannesburg, South Africa. At the age of nine he went to work in a tinsmithy. He taught himself to read and write and during intervals between work went to school." [Quoted from the dust wrapper's blurb]. Good .
