Description: New York, NY: Sheldon & Company, (1871). (1871). - Octavo, 7-1/2 inches by 5 inches. Hardcover, bound in purple cloth titled in gilt on the front cover, with a later paper label glued to the spine by a previous collector. The purple covers are largely faded to tan, quite unevenly so on the back cover. There is light wear to the head & tail of the spine and the label is chipped. 47 pages and an ad, illustrated with cartoons attributed to Henry Louis Stephens. A previous owner's bookplate is mounted on the front pastedown and there is some minor rippling to the pastedowns and endpapers. Very good.

First edition, second state with a Ball, Black & Co. advertisement on the copyright page. [BAL 3326].

"Throughout the text appear 11 political cartoons relating to the scandals growing out of the Erie Railroad and the Erie ring. [Henry Louis] Stephens was probably responsible for them although only 2 bear his initials. The engraving was done by the N.Y.
