The prolific early 20th century author Sophie Kerr (1880-1965) wrote stories featuring smart ambitious women as protagonists. Much like her protagonists, Kerr was small town girl who became a successful career woman at a time where few women could become financially self-sufficient. Moving to New York City, Kerr supported herself as a magazine editor and wrote more 500 short stories and 23 novels. She also authored several poems and a Broadway play. In 1965, Sophie Kerr funded an endowment for Maryland's Washington College to award an annual literary prize to support promising young writers. The prize is the nation's largest undergraduate literary prize and is considered one of the largest in the world, greater than the sums awarded by the Pulitzer Prize as well as the National Book Award and National Book Critics Circle. Good .
