First edition. Inscribed by Dorothy Canfield on the title page to Columbia University Professor John H.H. Lyon: "With pleasant memories of a pleasant meeting with John H.H. Lyon", signed "Dorothy Canfield".
Professor Emeritus of English at Columbia University, John H.H. Lyon was highly regarded for his lively courses on Shakespearean drama. Professor Lyon would often invite literary figures such as Sinclair Lewis, Gertrude Stein, Erskine Caldwell and Clare Booth Luce to lecture to his students. Something of a Renaissance man, Professor Lyon had in his younger days administered Columbia University's pre-medical courses which were offered at Long Island University's campus and also planned the pre-law courses Columbia offered for the Brooklyn Law School of St. Lawrence University.
