Instrumental in the 1846 Oregon Treaty, the politician Thomas Hart Benton (1782-1858) was an ally of president Andrew Jackson. This speech by Senator Benton of Missouri, addressed to the U.S. Senate, calls for divorcing the government from banks, particularly the National Bank. Benton opposed paper money as favoring the elite and a disadvantage to farmers and small merchants. His support of gold bullion earned him the nickname of "Old Bullion".
